The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is about the everyday life of a demigod. The story begins when Percy, a twelve year old dyslexic with ADHD, finds his somewhat normal life turned upside down.
Percy becomes suspicious when his Pre-Algebra teacher turns into a flying monster and tries to attack him. Nobody believes Percy, including his best friend, Grover, and his Latin teacher, who helped save him. Weeks later he is expelled and finishes his school year on a sour note.
After arriving home for summer break, Percy's mother surprises him with a trip to their beach house in Montauk. For Percy, it's more of a getaway from Gabe, his abusive stepfather.
After arriving in Montauk, Percy's friend, Grover, shows up at their door, nervous and afraid. Percy's mother realizes that something is wrong and shoves both of them into the car. Percy's mother explains that something is after them and it wants him. She tells Percy that she is taking him to Camp Half-Blood for children that are half-god, half-human. Barely a mile away from the camp, the car is attacked by a minotaur. Percy's mother is vaporized by the minotaur, but Percy manages to kill it and take its horn. Luckily, he stumbles into the camp with Grover by his side.
Percy is accepted into the camp and is sent to the god, Hermes', cabin because nobody knows who his father is. Percy is also surprised to find out that Grover is a satyr and his Latin teacher (who works there) is a centaur. He also becomes friends with Annabeth, Athena's daughter, and Luke, Hermes' son.
Percy finds out who his father is soon enough. While playing a mock war game, Poseidon claims Percy as his son. Soon after, Percy realizes that his father needs him to go on a quest to recover Zeus' precious master lightning bolt, that was stolen. Everyone believes that Poseidon took it.
So Percy embarks on a perilous journey with Grover and Annabeth. They travel through the country, while every so often being attacked by monsters. They also receive some help from Ares, god of war.
They safely arrive in L.A., which is home to Hades, god of the underworld. They believe that he took the master bolt. They soon find out that it is not true and Hades himself is missing his Helm of Darkness. Percy's mother is being kept captive by Hades because he believes that Percy has his helm and the bolt. Percy claims that this is not true, but mysteriously, he finds the master bolt in his backpack.
Percy and his friends barely escape the underworld alive. Along the way they meet Ares again. They soon realize that it was Ares that took the helm and master bolt. He framed Percy with the master bolt, but has the helm. Percy manages to get the helm and gives it back to Hades.
After dealing with Ares, the three friend are picked up by the police and given a plane ride back to New York City. Percy goes to Mount Olympus, which on top of the Empire State Building, and gives Zeus the master bolt. He also meets his father, Poseidon.
Percy goes back to camp and is greeted by Luke. Luke takes him into the woods but instead of a friendly good-bye, Luke tries to kill him. Percy is barely saved, but he's able to leave to go back home. Before leaving, he promises Poseidon that he will be back next summer.
