April 18, 2016 Celine Morali was honored in Paris by the Comite Francais de Yad Vashem with the Righteous Among the Nations award. Survivors Dr. Claude Zenatti and Mme Arlette Zenatti the guests of honor for provided testimony of their experiences during World War II and in particular spending their last night in Paris at the apartment of Madame Morali before being spirited away over the border at Chalon-sur-Saone. My speech is below:
Bonjour. Je m’appelle Marie-Anne. I want to express our deep appreciation to the Yad Vashem in Israel and the Comite Français de Yad Vashem for providing this opportunity to honor our grandmother.
Planted in my heart at a tender age was a great admiration for my grandmother.
When I was a little girl my mother brought the children across the Atlantic every four years to visit our Grandmother Morali. We lived with her on rue de Tolbiac for months at a time. While there I attended Ecole Patay, and ran shopping errands after school. I remember not being allowed to pay for our family portraits taken by Madame Anna Rabkine down the street at Studio Rabkine, because of what Grandmother had done during the war. And when I had to visit Dr. Zenatti to get my first pair of glasses, he declared in his office that no member of the Morali family would ever pay for his services. I was too young to ask what she had done. Our father simply told us, “You must behave and respect Meme because she was very brave during the war. “
It was years later after my mother Simone died that I found documents, letters and photographs among her personal papers that told the story of rescue and resistance among the Morali family during the Second World War. After I retired from teaching, I came back to Paris to interview my cousins and visit the store Quinquaillerie ROMO. Did any of the people Grandmother help survive the war I wondered? It was not until after my cousin Michel found in his attic a letter of testimony dated 1958 written and signed by Dr. Emile Zenatti that we discovered our Ophthalmologist had a family. I searched the Internet and found his son Dr. Claude and afterwards his daughter Mme Arlette Zenatti living near Paris. At last we had our answer. Yes there were survivors among the many saved by Madame Morali. Their moving testimony and desire to honor Madame Morali is how we have come to this day of remembrance and celebration. The entire family is deeply grateful for their testimony and their loyal regard for Madame Celine Morali.
