Review of ‘The 50 greatest prehistoric sites of the world’ by Barry Stone

Perhaps surprisingly, I very much enjoyed reading this travel reference guide straight through. The book mentions several prehistoric sites that I have visited. It thus acted as a way of fondly remembering places which I had previously enjoyed. It also made me wonder why I had failed to visit other sites which were near places where I had stayed. Stone defined the term ‘prehistoric’ in the introduction which as he explains, means ‘at a time before the invention of writing in the society under consideration’. The book charts a journey from the Vézère Valley in the Dordogne in France more than four hundred thousand years ago to the island of Nias in present day Indonesia. From the places that I have visited and know about, the book seems accurate and up to date in its scholarship, though an index would have been helpful.
A problem in visiting prehistoric sites is often their remoteness and the fact that the artefacts that have been discovered there are now in central museums for safe-keeping. Stone advises the reader of such cases. The book also mentions other sites apart from the fifty promised that relate to the major site. There may be some of my favourites that are omitted such as Maiden Castle in Dorset, UK, but the book is great in making the reader remember their experiences and acting as a guide towards future travels.
